Project Overview

The Girah-e-Ishtiraq project used arts-based methods and cultural traditions to address trauma in Pakistan, fostering healing through creativity, connection, and community.

Unlearning to Relearning; A Trauma Informed Journey:

The Girah-e-Ishtiraq project was a transformative journey of healing and connection, addressing the deep scars of trauma in Pakistan. Rooted in the essence of collaboration, it sought to untangle the complexities of emotional and psychological suffering while weaving a stronger fabric of community and care.

At its heart, this project invited participants to unlearn conventional, often inaccessible methods of mental health support and embrace a more human-centered, culturally resonant approach. By integrating arts-based therapies—like clay work, sound meditation, and reflective storytelling—with local metaphors and spiritual traditions, the initiative reimagined trauma not as a weakness but as a profound adaptation to life’s challenges.

The training provided a safe and creative space for participants to explore their emotional landscapes. Through shared experiences and the act of creating, they not only cultivated personal growth but also reconnected with a sense of community and collective resilience. The shift in understanding and practice was remarkable, evidenced by the 128-point improvement in participants' knowledge and skills.

Reflecting on Girah-e-Ishtiraq is to see the power of art, culture, and connection as a force for healing. It’s a reminder that true growth begins when we let go of rigid patterns and embrace the beauty of relearning together.

I will be treating my trauma patients differently now. It will be helpful for my patients to tell them about mindful techniques - Participant Perspective
